Farrier Encyclopedia: Diseases that Impact Soundness.

There are a lot of things that can happen to a horse that will impact soundness that don't start-out in the hooves.  Naturally, many of these conditions and diseases are defined in Millwater's Farriery: The Illustrated Dictionary of Horseshoeing and Hoofcare.

Here are a few of the shorter ones...

Farrier encyclopedia cover design...

Okay...  Having worked my way through the entry drafts list, it's time to start actually putting this thing together.  That includes a cover.

First stab at the new design.  Mostly just to try out the montage border approach.

It's kinda' busy, but the idea is for it to convey the whole "busting at the seems with info" thing...  And to be strikingly different than the earlier lexicons.

May replace several of the images.  May go to four big ones in the corners with or without smaller pics in-between.  Could still go an entirely different direction...

   So how about some opinions?

More, Straight from the Horse's Mouth...

Historically, farriers have been charged with horse care above and beyond shoeing.  So it shouldn't be too surprising that Millwater's Farriery: The Illustrated Dictionary of Horseshoeing and Hoofcare would have entries on dental topics.

Encyclopedia of Farriery: Teeth Appendix...

Yeah, the teeth are a long way from the hooves.  But, as equine car professionals, farriers ought to know a little more about horses than just how to mount them on iron.  So Millwater's Farriery: The Illustrated Dictionary of Horseshoeing and Hoofcare includes quite a few entries on fundamental horsemanship, and this chart on basic aging of horses by teeth.

The base images were recycled from a couple of 19th Century books.  I had to modify them extensively to depict the key features I wanted to illustrate.  I started to draw them from scratch myself, but I'm already wearing my drawing table out with diagrams for the laminitis/founder anchor article...  And I really liked the look of these old drawings.

Of course, the print file is much higher resolution than what I'm posting online.

Encyclopedia of Farriery Appendix: Plate Closure.

The tradition of including an appendix of illustrations in the Millwater dictionaries arose from the simple fact that, when we did the first Pocket Dictionary of Farrier Terms and Technical Language, we didn't have the wherewithal to incorporate illustrations into the main body of the book text.

Even though we've had in-text illustrations in the last several editions, we've kept the appendix as well.  It does allow for full-page images, after all.  We've kept the same pages since 1994, but upgraded the illustration quality several times.

For Millwater's Farriery: The Illustrated Dictionary of Horseshoeing and Hoofcare, we're going to add some pages to the appendix.  Including this one (much higher resolution in the book, of course)...  The closure of the epiphyseal plates is relevant to making permanent adjustments in stance, and understanding why physically over-stressing young horses can be so detrimental.

Approximate Epiphyseal Closure.

Why does Tennessee get all the cred?

Among the new entries for Millwater's Farriery: The Illustrated Dictionary of Horseshoeing and Hoofcare will be a couple of horseshoes that reference the Volunteer State in their names...

The Tennessee Navicular Shoe.

and...

The Memphis Bar Shoe.

Assuming, that is, that the latter isn't named for the Egyptian original or something.

Encyclopedia Sample: Farrier's Radiograph.

It's true that modern radiology can be a great tool when it comes to horseshoeing and hoofcare.

But let us not forget the value of an older, and in some ways more detailed source of insight.

from next year's encyclopedic dictionary.
